Assi Prof. Yunguang Sun

Biography :

Yunguang Sun was born in Jiangsu, China in 1976 and he received his MD from the Nanjing Medical University in 1998 and his PhD from the Fudan University of Shanghai in 2003. Subsequently, Dr. Sun received extensive biomedical research training in the US, including NIH, Bethesda, MD (2003-2008), Vanderbilt University, Nashville TN (2008-2011), and at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), Philadelphia PA (2011-2015). Dr. Sun Joined Medical College of Wisconsin as an Assistant Professor of Pathology on research track in 2015. His research interests are developing and analyzing a series of patient-derived xenograft (PDX) breast cancer models in unique prolactin-humanized mouse model. He has established several models spontaneously metastasize to vital organs, including lungs and liver (as well as bone), opening previously unachievable pharmacological targeting of sub-clinical metastases in the adjuvant setting (following surgical removal of primary tumors). This is critically important since patients die from metastases to vital organs, and effect on primary tumor growth may differ from effects in metastases. In addition to spearheading efforts to establish panels of transplantable patient‐derived xenograft (PDX) models of therapy-naïve ER-positive breast cancer, Dr. Sun has successfully derived another series of intriguing endocrine-resistant PDX sub‐lines. His interests focus on the mechanism of Tamoxifen resistance and how to overcome it. He got Scientific Retreat Travel Awards in 2008 when he worked at National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and he got three VICTR (Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research) resource award Vanderbilt CTSA grant UL1 RR024975 from NCRR/NIH in 2010. He is now actively act as PI/CI/KP in several ACS and NIH grants.
